What is Balance-Ability?

The programme is a structured course that combines unique ergonomic balance bikes with a schedule of fun activities that build confidence, spatial awareness and dynamic balance skills enabling young children to cycle without ever needing stabilisers.

  • Each member of staff has their own personal development folder to help develop, support, reflect and evidence progress.

  • Regular feedback to help create, achieve, and reflect on weekly goals.

Professional development should include collaboration and expert challenge

  • Delivered on site in your lesson with your pupils.
  • Mentoring relationship pre, during and post lesson delivery.

  • Sport Educator can help engage children in sustained physical activity opportunitiese.g. Extra-curricular clubs, playleader awards etc.

Why is Balance-Ability important for children?

Pedal independently

Nearly half of the UK’s kids are unable to ride a bike by the time they turn six due to the increased pressures of modern lifestyles. By the time children reach year 5, only 50% of pupils on average can ride a pedal bike independently. Through a fun and safe introduction to riding a bike, Balance-ability aims to 'embed in the psyche' of young children that cycling is a part of life.

Improve skills

By improving balance and sensory processing skills, children with healthy vestibular systems can excel and those with challenges or weaknesses (those with Dyslexia, Down Syndrome, ADD and ADHD) can improve dramatically.

Enjoy physical activity

Fundamental motor skills are the building blocks for engagement in physical activity and aid all aspects of the learning process. If these skills are underdeveloped in childhood, children's ability to participate in and enjoy physical activity can be greatly diminished. In practicing gross and fine motor skills, children not only gain intellectually, but also grow in strength, develop new skills, and enjoy increased confidence levels in the face of new challenges.

A vital life skill every child deserves

Swimming is an essential life skill. Alarmingly, 1 in  4 children in England leave primary school unable to swim 25 metres or perform crucial safe self-rescue—this could surge to 1 in 3 by 2025, if  no action is  taken. Swim:ED is here to stem the tide, ensuring every pupil is equipped with this life-saving skill.

Why?

Physical Inactivity

Today’s children may be the first generation to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. Currently, just 23% of boys and 20% of girls meet the recommended 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day. For many children in your school, the school day provides their only opportunity to be active.

Workforce

Ofsted’s new framework highlights health, well-being and behaviour as key priority areas. However, tight budgets have resulted in schools struggling to identify ways in which they can engage children in activity and boost health and well-being throughout the school day. As a result, non-teaching staff are often used to supervise children on the playground. Yet, most receive little or no training.

Engagement

In so many school’s children become bored on the playground and football dominates, mainly because there isn’t anything else to do. Our risk adverse culture and play equipment that usually includes balls, skipping ropes and a few hoops often means there is little to stimulate our pupil’s imagination.

Pupil Behaviour

These common problems lead to a high level of lunchtime incidents and accidents. Lunchtime supervisors are often left to try and resolve petty arguments that can end up carrying over into the classroom.
